About Independence Inc.

Support that helps people live their own lives

We are a Central Florida organization. We help adults with disabilities stay in their own home, keep their own routine, and stay close to the people and places that matter to them.

Why we exist

Getting support too often means bending your life around someone else’s schedule. You explain your situation again to a new face every few months. You settle for less independence than you are capable of, because that is what was on offer. We started because it should work the other way around.

So we start with the person. Their goals, their routine, the neighborhood they live in. Then we build the support to match. All four of our services run under one team, which means families and support coordinators talk to people who already know the situation instead of starting over every call.

Two women lean their heads together and pull playful faces on a terrace surrounded by palm trees.

Who runs it

Meet the owners

Independence Inc. is owned and run by two people who are still in the work, not just on the letterhead.

Jay Judy

Co-Owner

Jay is a co-owner and handles most of what happens behind the scenes, from staffing and scheduling to service authorizations. He got into this work after watching people get support built around somebody else's schedule. He still keeps a hand in the day to day, so when he says he understands a situation, he generally does.

Keith Browne

Co-Owner

Keith is a co-owner and usually the first person a family ends up talking to, whether you call the office or meet him in person. He would rather hear what is actually going on than run anybody through a script, and he has very little patience for a process that makes life harder. He tends to spot a problem before it becomes a phone call.

What guides us

The values behind the work

The person leads

We build support around someone's goals and choices. Not the other way around, and not around what is convenient for us.

Part of the community

Independence is not the same thing as being alone. Good support keeps people connected to the neighborhood they already live in.

Dignity in the ordinary

A morning routine deserves the same respect as a night out. Most of this work happens in ordinary moments, and we treat them that way.

Eligibility & funding

Programs we accept

We're an approved provider across Florida's home and community-based programs, so support can be authorized through the plan you already have.

Who we generally support

  • Adults age 18 and older with a disability, living in the Central and Suncoast Region of Florida.
  • Enrolled in a Florida Medicaid waiver or managed care long-term care program, or working toward one.
  • Support needs identified in a current support plan, or a situation you'd like help assessing.
  • Family caregivers who need planned or emergency respite coverage.

Not sure if you qualify?

Your program and support plan decide eligibility and covered hours, not us. If you're not sure where you stand, call. We'll help you work it out, and there's no cost to ask.
